Can we have a more equitable, cleaner energy system? Mary Powell of Green Mountain Power shows us we can. When she took the helm as CEO of Vermont’s largest utility, Mary re-invented it, evolving their business practices to include clean energy, excellent customer service, and a bottom line that included social benefits. GMP became the foremost utility in the nation to embrace solar and wind power. It was the first to help customers install Tesla batteries on their homes. They built solar farms on landfills, helped a town earn income through a wind farm, and have the highest national percentage of renewable energy in their energy mix. During Mary’s tenure, GMP was recognized for four years in a row as “America’s most innovative utility.” With the right leaders, change is possible.
